ChatGPT Ads officially arrived in Romania on August 24, 2026, as OpenAI expanded ChatGPT advertising to 31 European markets.
I wanted to see what this new experience actually looks like for a user in Romania.
Not in a product presentation. Not in a demo.
But in an ordinary conversation.
The result?
Within approximately 15 minutes, I observed two ads in ChatGPT conversations.
I documented the experience with three screenshots showing how an ad appears in a conversation, which options are available through the three-dot menu, and what information users can access in the “About this ad” section.
For marketers, the launch of ChatGPT Ads is significant because it introduces advertising into an environment that differs from traditional Search and Social Media: the AI conversation.
How Do ChatGPT Ads Appear?
The first observation is simple but important: the ad appears below the ChatGPT response.
It is labelled as sponsored content and visually separated from the answer generated by the model.

For users, this creates a different experience from traditional search engine advertising.
Instead of a search results page with ads displayed above or below organic results, we have a conversation.
The user asks a question, receives an answer and, in certain contexts, may see an ad at the end of the response. The ad is selected by OpenAI based on factors that can include the conversation context and what the user is trying to accomplish.
This introduces a new advertising environment, distinct from the formats we have traditionally encountered in Search and Social Media.
How Relevant Were the ChatGPT Ads to Me?
The two ads I encountered during my test caught my attention for another reason: both were related to my professional interests and activities.
The first ad was for Cloudflare. I had previously analysed a statistic from Cloudflare in an article I published.
The second ad was for a digital marketing agency — a field directly related to my professional work.
It is important to clarify that these two observations do not prove that the ads were selected exclusively on the basis of my interests or previous activities.
However, they are an interesting signal.
OpenAI explains that its advertising system can take into account the context of the current conversation and what the user is trying to accomplish when selecting relevant ads.
In my case, seeing an ad from a brand I had previously written about and another from my professional field within approximately 15 minutes raises an interesting question:
How relevant can advertising become in an AI-powered conversational environment?
I believe this is worth monitoring as ChatGPT Ads expands.
One of the major differences from traditional advertising is that relevance is no longer discussed solely in terms of the keywords people search for or the content they consume in a feed. The context of an AI-powered conversation also becomes relevant.
What Options Do Users Have for ChatGPT Ads?
Another interesting detail appears when you click the three-dot menu.

Screenshot: The three-dot menu and available ad options
For me, this part of the experience is just as interesting as the ad itself.
Why?
Because it shows that the experience is not only about displaying advertising, but also about how users can interact with it.
In a conversational ecosystem, the options available to users in relation to an ad become part of the advertising experience itself.
What Is “About This Ad” in ChatGPT?
I also wanted to find out how much information users can access about an ad.
By selecting “About this ad,” users can view additional information about the advertisement and how it was selected.

This is an important feature in an environment where advertising appears alongside an AI-generated response.
OpenAI states that ads are separate from ChatGPT’s answers and do not influence the model’s responses.
Advertisers also do not have access to users’ conversations.
According to OpenAI, the advertising system can consider the context and intent of the current conversation, as well as factors such as the ad content and landing page.
In other words, conversational context becomes an important component of this new advertising experience.
Who Can See Ads in ChatGPT?
Ads are not available across all ChatGPT account types.
Currently, ads may be displayed to users on the Free and Go plans.
They are not displayed to users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans.
Ads are also not displayed to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18.
For this case study, I observed the experience using a Free account.
Why Do ChatGPT Ads Matter in Romania?
ChatGPT already has a strong presence in Romania’s AI chatbot market.
In July 2026, ChatGPT accounted for 82.18% of the AI chatbot market in Romania, according to StatCounter Global Stats.
During the same month, ChatGPT.com recorded approximately 24.33 million visits in Romania and ranked 12th among the country’s most visited websites, according to Semrush.
These figures provide important context for the arrival of ChatGPT Ads in Romania.
This is not an advertising channel without an established audience.
It is a platform already widely used in Romania, where advertising is now beginning to become part of the conversational experience.
How Are ChatGPT Ads Different from Search Ads and Social Media Ads?
Until now, marketers have primarily bought visibility across two major types of environments: Search and Social Media.
Search
Users search for something, and the search engine displays organic results alongside advertisements.
Social Media
Users consume content in a feed, and advertisements are inserted into that content stream.
With the introduction of ChatGPT Ads, a new form of advertising emerges: conversational advertising.
ChatGPT
Users interact with an AI, ask questions, explore options, request comparisons and may gradually move towards a decision.
This difference matters.
In ChatGPT, users do not necessarily enter a keyword and receive a list of results.
Instead, they can:
- Ask follow-up questions.
- Request comparisons.
- Ask for recommendations.
- Explore alternatives.
- Gradually move towards a decision.
This is why conversational advertising could develop into a distinct advertising category.
How Does Advertising Work in AI Conversations?
The advertising model introduced by ChatGPT also changes the questions marketers need to ask.
In traditional advertising, relevance is often built around factors such as keywords, audiences, interests, behaviours and the content people consume.
In an AI conversation, the context of the interaction can become an additional factor in determining relevance.
A user may start with a general question and, through several messages, arrive at a much more specific need.
In this context, advertising is no longer simply positioned alongside a piece of content.
It can appear within an experience in which the user is actively exploring a problem, evaluating alternatives or considering a decision.
This is one of the developments marketers should monitor as AI Search and AI Advertising continue to evolve.
How Can Businesses in Romania Advertise on ChatGPT?
Update — September 1, 2026
ChatGPT Ads Manager, with self-service functionality, is now available in Romania.
OpenAI updated its official availability list, with Romania marked as “Available” under the Self-service category.
This means advertisers in Romania can access ChatGPT Ads Manager to create their accounts and manage campaigns.
What Do ChatGPT Ads Mean for Marketers?
For marketers, ChatGPT Ads is not simply another platform on which to buy impressions.
It represents a potential new point of intersection between:
AI Search → AI Visibility → Advertising → Consumer Decision-Making
Until now, discussions about AI Visibility have largely focused on one question:
“Is my brand mentioned or recommended by AI?”
With advertising entering AI conversations, another question emerges:
“What happens when AI-generated organic visibility and paid advertising coexist within the same experience?”
In my view, this is one of the developments marketers will need to monitor.
For brands, appearing in AI-generated answers will not be the only consideration.
It will become increasingly important to understand how users discover, compare and evaluate brands in these new conversational environments.
Search → AI Search → AI + Advertising
The evolution can be simplified as follows:
Search → AI Search → AI + Advertising
This does not mean Search or Social Media will disappear.
It means a new environment is emerging in which discovery, information gathering, comparison and advertising can take place within the same conversational experience.
This may change how brands approach online visibility.
A New Model Is Taking Shape: AI Search, AI Visibility and Conversational AI Advertising
In this case study, I observed two ads during approximately 15 minutes of using ChatGPT.
It may seem like a minor detail.
However, when viewed in the context of the Romanian market, it is an interesting signal.
ChatGPT already holds a dominant share of AI chatbot usage in Romania, generates millions of monthly visits and now has an advertising system that is becoming visible to Romanian users.
Moreover, in my case study, both ads were related to my interests and professional field. This is not enough to establish how the targeting mechanism works, but it is enough to raise an important question about the relevance of advertising in a conversational environment.
For marketers, the question is no longer just where people search for information.
It is also:
“What happens when people search, compare and make decisions through AI conversations?”
This is where AI Search, AI Visibility and Conversational Advertising are increasingly likely to intersect.
