How Is AI Search Changing Professional Visibility?
Professional visibility used to mean being found on Google, having a well-optimized LinkedIn profile, or being mentioned in relevant online sources.
In AI Search, visibility also depends on whether AI systems can identify you, understand who you are, connect your expertise to a specific context, and consider you relevant when generating answers and recommendations.

What Does the Study Show?
- Website – The leading source category used by AI systems when building professional profiles and generating answers.
- LinkedIn – An important source for AI Visibility, but not sufficient on its own.
- Discovery ≠ Recommendation – Being identified by AI does not automatically mean being recommended by AI.
- Digital Ecosystem – AI systems combine information from websites, LinkedIn, online media, directories, and other digital sources.
- LinkedIn Visibility ≠ AI Visibility – A strong LinkedIn presence does not automatically translate into stronger visibility across AI Search.

Being Found by AI and Being Recommended by AI Are Different Goals
The study highlights an important distinction between AI identification and AI recommendation.
AI may successfully identify a professional when a user enters their name. However, this does not necessarily mean that the same professional will be selected when the user asks AI for a general recommendation.
This means that AI Search optimization needs to address different questions:
Can AI discover you?
Does AI know who you are?
Does AI have enough evidence to recommend you?
These distinctions are particularly relevant to AI Visibility Optimization, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
